USS Defiant Shuttlecraft Rio Grande
USS Defiant Shuttlecraft Rio Grande

The tinny voice of Mr. Worf

Grown silent now at last

Has echoed from the Christmas tree

Of many seasons past.

.

We laughed at Buddy's interest

When we'd turn on the tree

He'd always come and take a look

The curious Buddy Lee.

.

The shuttle craft has lost its voice

The micro chip is quiet.

And yet I do not toss it out

I dare not start a riot.

.

His head pressed firmly on his paws

He guards the silent tree

"Where is the Klingon warrior's voice?"

"That used to speak to me?"

.

Buddy Lee
Buddy Lee
Newly rescued
Newly rescued

Each morning when the lights went on

The Klingon's voice would call

And Buddy Lee would tilt his head

In wonderment and awe.

.

The micro chip inside the ship

Spoke deeply from the boughs

And Buddy Lee would come and look

To find the source of prose.

.

The Warrior's voice is silent now

Its magic has been spent

Though Buddy Lee still stalks the tree

Amid the limbs he's bent.

.

The thoughts inside my canine's head

Remain a mystery yet

The strange attraction Buddy feels

Is plain for all to see.

.

Not the mouse, the Shuttlecraft.
Not the mouse, the Shuttlecraft.

And now to find another craft

On eBay do I search

The plastic shuttle Rio Grande

Not on the planet Earth.

.

My purchase from the on-line store

With automated tracking.

Bud looks at us with pleading eyes

His Klingon mentor lacking.

.

Bizarre and disconnected from

The day of Jesus' birth

Yet still I long for Deep Space Nine

To celebrate with mirth.

.

I'll hope that it arrives in time

Without delay or reasons.

And pray each day that Buddy stays

To celebrate more seasons.

"I wish you a most honorable holiday. Kaaplaah!"
"I wish you a most honorable holiday. Kaaplaah!"

For he's grown old my Buddy Lee

His bright eyes now grown dim.

And Christmas wouldn't be the same

An empty day without him.

.

So hasten to me U.P.S.

Your brown truck at my door.

And let me see Bud's eyes light up

When Worf will speak once more.

Wow or Woof! Buddy Lee is so loved, I can see. He is a majestic looking creature and I hope he is with you for a few more seasons. Best wishes of the season to you, Lee and your family.

Thanks so much for stopping by to read and comment. It's taken me almost a year to post this hub, sofs. Last Christmas was his last and we miss him so much.

The season's best to you and yours as well; a time for counting blessings, never losses.

Oh Peg what wonderful hub to a wonderful dog. That last photo of him was awesome.

I know it's awful when they pass over even though they have left us with so many happy memories.

I think this saying rings true: 'They may be gone from our homes but never from our hearts.' I bet you felt saddness but also a tinge of joyousness also.

Take care and this one has to have an awesome/beautiful and up.

That's the trouble with dogs; they just don't live long enough. But, on the other hand, we get to know more of them. I know how you feel. My once mighty mastiff, Dick, is a shuffling, wobbly old guy now... Ah, yes. May buddy find his Klingon. Lynda

Hello Eiddwen, It's easy to spot another animal lover. So glad to find you here on HubPages. Yes, there was a terrible time of sadness right at Christmas last year. We were devastated and so was Cookie, the remaining one of four originally. But now that we adopted "little" Tony, our tears have turned into laughter and joy. Buddy is no less missed or mourned, but the gaping hole is smaller now. Bless you for your kindness my new friend.

Hey Lynda, I was wondering about Dick. Still hanging in there, poor old guy. Isn't it amazing to watch their short life spans zoom by from puppies to old age in a spin of crazy moments?

I remember the day I found Buddy wandering by the highway with another stray. He gobbled down some kibble I had and then hopped right into my truck. Away we went home to find one of my other dogs, Slick, had fallen and couldn't get up. But he recovered and then we had three dogs, then later four.

Hope you have a great Christmas if I don't see you between now and then. May many blessings come your way. Peace, Peg

Oh, Peggy, what a beautiful Ode to a family friend! Like Shakespeare eluded to in his sonnets, because you have written his poem, your dear doggy friend Buddy will continue to live on.

PegCole - I enjoyed this wonderfully written poem. Nice to find another friend of the breed. Your pictures are great, i could see Buddy hearing and peering!

Your old Buddy sounds like a hound dear to my own heart. I look at this old hound Elliot and don't care too much for the thought of living without him either.

Peace Peg, throughout years of seasons ... gregZ

gregZ, I love your stories about Elliot and am envious of where you live. I spent many hours fishing and getting sunburned on those beautiful islands. From your Native Florida friend, many blessings to you through the years as well. Thanks for the really nice comments and for stopping in. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

What a beautiful dog he was! The pix are awesome. Our pets do leave gaping holes when they die, don't they? And a dog like your Buddy Lee can be a very special part of the family.

Thanks for sharing.

Love and peace

When I read, "Last Christmas was his last and we miss him so much." I had been thinking, why don't they live forever, not knowing that already he had left you.

What a beautiful boy. What a lovely and evocative poem.

I can't think of anything to say, apart from, "Thank you for a lovely hub".

PegCole17 profile image

PegCole17 Hub Author 16 months ago

Twilight Lawns - You are an awesome poet and I appreciate your kind comments here. Time marches on yet Buddy's memory remains fresh - he was a good boy, loving and gentle, always thanked me after his meals. He was eternally grateful, as are most strays who've found a home.

Thank you for stopping in.

Beautiful dog, lovely photos and lots of memories to hold on to. Thank you for sharing him with us. Our animals are so precious, My Bouncer is still hanging on but I am afraid not for too much longer. His breathing gets worse by the day and even the vet is amazed at his huge will to live. I am not looking forward to the inevitable.

PegCole17 Hub Author 15 months ago

Bluestar, It's clear to see you hold a special place in your heart for animals. So sad to hear about Bouncer and his struggle. I remember our vet saying he hoped he looked as good as Buddy did at 91; 13 is very old for a big dog. Yes - the end is the saddest part. Hope today is a good one for Bouncer and you too. Thanks for dropping by and for the sweet words.

Thanks for sharing your lovely prose about Rocky. Perhaps he and Buddy Lee are chasing bunnies in the clouds. It certainly wouldn't be Heaven without our furry companions there to join us. All the best to you.

Ah, Peg,

I know we are sisters now... your Buddy is my Alvin Wesley... and we will never stop missing our boys or remembering the love they shared with us. My wise vet / friend tells me frequently to love my fur babies each and every day I am lucky enough to have them in my world.

Your pictures are awesome-- what loved doggies and what a BEAUTIFUL Mamma!! Thank you for sharing this, no matter what the timeframe. Lotsa love, Maria

Maria, my new twin sister from another mother,

Alvin Wesley and Buddy Lee are chasing the ham truck in Heaven together. Yes, their short lives are the only downside to loving them. Makes every day precious.

It has only been a couple of Christmases ago since his warm brown eyes looked at me with such adoration. Doesn't it make you melt? They are each truly a gift that keeps on giving.

Lotsa love richochet,

Peg

Oh yeah, Peg, my boy loved his ham, steak, would have stolen Earl's bacon right out from under him (shameless...)! But, like Buddy Lee, he had those 'big browns' that got him outta all kinds of trouble!

I am treasuring the ham truck analogy... thank you, sis!

Have a lovely night, Maria

PegCole17 profile image

PegCole17 Hub Author 5 months ago

Hi Maria, It's an old Larsen comic strip that says "And every day on the hour, a large truck made entirely of ham goes rumbling slowly down the streets of Heaven for all the dogs to chase." We laughed at that one for years. You are a delight. Sweet dreams of your Alvin Wesley. Love, Peg
