How To Add a Link Using a Link Capsule on HubPages, The Non Techie Version
88
Have you ever wondered how to add a link within your HubPages article? Links give the reader a path to other hubs whether written by yourself or other HubPages authors. Links can also be used to direct readers to off site locations, like your blog or your website or even to your reference material.
Keep in mind, there is a limit as to how many outgoing links should be used within a hub. Please refer to the Terms and Conditions for complete details. When a reader stays on the HubPages site longer it improves our traffic statistics.
Adding a link can be done several ways, but for the technically challenged like me, the easiest way I've found is using the Link Capsule feature. Capsules appears on the right side of the page when you're in edit mode on a hub. Capsules are designed to let authors put photos, links, tables, polls, videos, advertising or other items into their articles.
This hub tries to explain in non technical, step by step directions how to use the link capsule feature. Suggestions for improvement are welcomed in the comment section below.

- Creating Referral Links For Your Hubs by PegCole17
To those of us who have created a few hubs but still feel like novices, one of the challenging things about HubPages is finding a clear, understandable process on How to create and add a referral tracker. ...
First, create more than one big block of text
It's tempting as a new HubPages writer to create hubs that contain just one huge block of text. While there may be good reasons for this, it can be to your advantage to create two or more capsules and break up that block.
Why? Because it gives the writer an option to add things like reference links, photos, Amazon capsules and so on, between the lines so to speak.
How do you do this? Here's my best explanation.
While you're in edit mode on a new hub, place your cursor to the left of a block of text you've written and saved. You should see the word "add" floating around on the left side. Click on the word add and choose text. Give it a few seconds and a new text capsule should pop into your hub article.
Adding Text Capsules with Blue Boxes like this
To get a text reference capsule to appear on the right side within your text, while you are in the edit mode of a hub, select the "add" a capsule button that is floating on the left of your text. Pick "text" from the list of capsules you can add. Wait a few seconds for the capsule to pop into the area above your current text.
Then use the right arrow to force the capsule over so it shares the space with your text like this box. To make the background color blue, use the background buttons located directly under the capsule subtitle by clicking on the light blue or medium blue box.
How to cut text and paste it into another text capsule
If you want to move some of the text you've already created:
- Go into edit mode on the text you have already written
- Use the cut and paste feature within the capsule to split up the text
- Highlight the text that you want to move
- Click on the scissors icon from the toolbar inside the capsule above the text
- Save the text capsule. (Don't cut or copy anything else until you have done the next step.)
- Now go into edit on the new text capsule you just added
- Press the clipboard looking icon and it will paste the text you just cut to wherever you have your cursor sitting in the new text capsule.
Adding a Link Capsule between blocks of text
Now that you have two blocks of text, you can add things between the blocks, for example, add a link to another chapter of your story, or add a link to your reference material source or add a sign up link or reference links to your other hubs.
Keep in mind that the HubPagesTerms and Conditions limit the number of links per hub you can use when directing people away from the site and stay within the rules. Please re-Read the T&Cs for a refresher on this.
While you're in edit mode in a hub, hover with your cursor to the left of a block of text and you will see the word "add" floating around as you move your cursor. When you press the word "add" you will get the following choices:
text, photo, video, link, news, rss, comment, poll, ebay, amazon, code, table, quiz, map
You can choose any of these capsules by selecting the one you want and clicking on the word. Give it a few seconds and the capsule will pop into where your cursor was sitting. By selecting the "link" capsule, you can now go into edit mode and add an http address of your choosing. Here's how to do that.
More ways to add links within your hubs
- How to Embed Links into Your Hubs
Here is a handy link that takes you to the HubPages Learning Center explanation for embedding links. Within this guide you'll find two additional ways for adding links to your hubs.
Open up a second window
It makes it easier to do if you open two windows and toggle between the hub you're editing and the hub you want to reference.
Say you're editing Chapter 1 of your story and you want to lead someone to Chapter 2 with a link. Somewhere near the bottom of your Chapter 1 hub, separate the text into two blocks using the method above.
In the other window you have open, select Chapter 2 of your story. Scroll down to the very bottom of the page below the ads where it says "link to this page" and press the text "link to this page". Now a new rectangle opens up with your default tracker and the http address of your Chapter 2 hub. Place your cursor on the highlighted link.
To copy the highlighted link (Hold down CTRL then the C key at the same time).
Toggle back to the Chapter 1 window. Place your cursor between two blocks of text where you added a new link capsule (by hovering to the left of any block of text, press the word "add". Choose "link" and in a moment a link capsule pops into the space where your cursor was sitting.)
Now go into edit mode on your new link capsule. You will see two buttons: URL and Search. Make sure that the button is pressed on URL. Place your cursor inside the empty rectangle and paste the address you just copied inside the box marked "URL".
To paste, hold down the CTRL key then press the letter V at the same time. This places the address you just copied from your Chapter 2 hub into that space. It should look something like this example link from one of my hubs titled Creating Sign-up Links Within Your Hubs.
EXAMPLE ONLY pegcole17 DOT hubpages DOT com/_1lvmratkz5gih/hub/Creating-Sign-Up-Links-Within-in-Your-Hubs
In this example, _1lvmratkz5gih is my default tracker. Notice there is an underscore before the tracker. For the tracker to work properly, put an underscore in front of your default tracker code.
Be sure you TEST the link by selecting "Test This Link" while you are in edit mode. If it worked, the text will read "Link is Good".
Now Type something like "To read the next exciting chapter of this story click here" as the description of the link. And for the Title, type the name of your Chapter 2 story or just type "Chapter 2".
Now Save. You did it!
Your helpful suggestions for improving this hub are welcomed. Please note corrections in the comments and I'll edit the hub to be more user friendly. I hope the information you find here is helpful as you learn your way around HubPages.

Thanks, Peg. As usual, filled with useful info. Lynda
Another very informative hub explaining in great detail things that add so much to a hub. I never knew the purpose of the link capsule as I have simply created links within the hub using the create link button at the top of the edit window of the hub I am editing. Great stuff!I'm voting this definitely up.
Great advice for beginners. Took me a while to figure it all out once I got on here when new too.
Excellent advice! Thank you for sharing needful tips with the Hub Pages Community.
Glad to read this hub, I am always struggling with ideas. I am learning all the time thanks to hubber like you. God bless.x
You know it's simple stuff like this that can be so hard for a beginner. They can spend weeks trying to figure it out and all the experienced users fail to write about it. I always hated to look so ignorant by asking, wish I had hubs like this when I started!
I shall keep this Hub as a reference, it is so well written and informative...and now I know. Thanks so much Peg.
Bookmarked this, useful and informative. Thanks!
Great help. Thank you.
This was very good and informative for me as well, i like the idea of linking your stories together i have had alot of other things going. Now i am going to get busy and finish my stories. Thanks alot

Thanks for the great information Peg. I'm going to bookmark it so I can use it when I do attempt this.
Excellent article. I didn't know about all this linking stuff.
"How To Add a Link to Your Hub using the Link Capsule Feature."
Very informative and simple hub. Educative and practical in style. No confusion at any place.
Besides the useful methodology presented and demonstrated in the hub the food for thought is that there is scope for saying even the things already said. Those who hesitate they cause two losses. one to themselves that they have the potential to say that attracts others. Second to others who are deprived of the grace available in their way of expression. God Almighty has gifted every human being with distinct potential and it is he or she who is to come forward and play his or her role in the best possible manner.
The hub deserves to be called an excellent hub.
May God bless all and every where.
Great advice to a beginning Hubber!
You just taught me how to use this new add capsule on the left margin. Thank you so much, as for the last few days, I have been trying to get a link between 2 capsules rather than at the end of the hub. Your article was very well written and I think it will be easy for me to follow, as I already know some of the stuff.
That's what I love about Hub pages...so much to learn and so many willing teachers. Thanks again.
peg, just read your hub!Great stuff I am book marking it for reference.
voted you up useful.Following you .
Big help Thanks so much. now to figure it all in my non technical mind!!!!
Great advice for beginners. Because we know how to do something ourselves it is all too easy to assume others know how to too.
If I may offer a suggestion... If you go here http://www.techsmith.com/jing/free/
and downlod jing you can get a perfect snapshot of the area on the screen that you are refering to. Visual always helps.

I did a hub on this subject 'Jing for the Perfect Screenshot Without the Clutter' showing just how easy it is and what can be done.
There are some great instructions here, useful information for us all, thanks :-)
thanks for the tip, Peg. I need all of the help that I can get.
Wow! I have only written two hubs (joined yesterday), and it's pretty much Greek to me right now. I hadn't even thought to do this. Thanks so much for the layman terms. I have bookmarked your hub, and plan to use it when I have written some more.
I just did it. Yeah! Thank you!
Wonderful information!I am in trouble all the time because of things I don't know.
I voted you useful and will print this to have besided me until I learn it.
Thanks for helping us.
Great Hub Peg I have bookmarked it, this will take a bit of reading before I try it. I think I might even print it out and go that way. (it's an age thingy!)
Thanks.
Gloshei
So THAT's how they do it! :) I kept seeing and wondering how other authors were able to add certain elements here and there. Now I know. Thank you, PegCole17 for your thorough and easy to follow directions. I'm going to try them on my next hub and then go back and "fix" some of my old hubs.
Peg
Once again I have read your very helpful hub, just to try to get a better idea of it. I'm feeling a little stupid here because I am not sure what a tracker code is.
If you could point this out ,I'd be grateful!
Thanks again!
Interesting and helpful article. Voted Up. GClark
Very informative! Need to read this hub over and over so bookmarked it. Voted up!
Thanks. I found my answer on your hub. I was really clueless about including the gray box inside my hub. But now I know the trick
@PegCole17...Thanks for sharing this information in non-technie language! I was having trouble linking, and reading this Hub makes the process understandable. I'll be putting your advice to use.
Great hub with very useful information. Thanks for sharing these helpful tips :) Voted up!
Hello, I found your hub very useful. I linked to it my newest hub published today and wanted to let you know. Thanks for the information!
Hi again!
you're so good at this stuff!
I wondered if you could help me with deleting a video capsule from my hub?
I have been told to just delete the capsule that the link is in,but this does not work, perhaps because I didn't go through the right channels.I think I just downloaded from youtube, when I read we could use youtube.
Thanks!!
